How about 2005 games whose graphics, or at least lighting and
shadowing, are still better than 95% of modern games (with the 5% being games
that support raytraced shadows). Click to zoom, as Quora’s resize algorithm
doesn’t do the screenshots justice:
This
is Quake 4, created by iD Software and Raven Software, running at maximum
settings on an RTX 3070 with a Ryzen 5 3600X. I’m using the Quake 4 Tweaker to
force max detail textures and to unlock the framerate, but nothing else, no
mods, no up-rezzed textures, no nothing - that’s just the vanilla game above. I
really cannot understand why shadow volumes weren’t more popular. At least
visually, it’s obviously the superior solution to shadow maps (if sharp and
accurate shadows are desired). Although I guess it doesn’t matter anymore, now
that we can have raytraced shadows, which are superior to both.
